Church Planting

CMIA operates approximately 200 churches in the following six East African countries.

  • Kenya
  • Uganda
  • Rwanda
  • Burundi
  • Tanzania
  • Democratic Republic of Congo

These churches operate under the name Church on the Rock Africa. Each Church on the Rock is lead by a local senior pastor who manages the day to day affairs of their church. Church on the Rock Africa has a leadership structure of overseers. Each overseer manages a cluster of churches. In this manner all churches work together in a unified way to spread the gospel. CMIA has churches planted in all kinds of environments, from large metropolitan slums, to remote rural villages.

About 75 percent of African Church on the Rock congregations are in CMIA’s headquarters nation of Kenya. However CMIA places a strong emphasis on planting churches in unreached areas. So the vision for Church on the Rock is for the growth rate of new churches in our other nations to increase rapidly. Every year we continue to see local churches planted which helps us in our goal of reaching more people with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

CMIA has been planting churches since 1985. In the beginning CMIA founders David and Jennifer Hatley were key in the planting of the original cluster of Churches on the Rock in the 1980’s and 90’s. Now this ministry is in its second and third generation, with many local pioneering pastors. All of these pastors are well trained and these pastors are now training new pioneering pastors, who in turn themselves are training and sending pastors, and so on.
